We had a great weekend in Ponte Vedra. We took two very equal teams to this event that we called Rampage-alpha and -zeta. Alpha had a somewhat tougher bracket and emerged as a wild card team after dropping two close ones to Team USA and the very intimidating Island Girls. They played fantastic in every game, but perhaps were a bit off against the Island Girls.... perhaps it was that they were thinking about what to wear that evening after being asked to go to the movies with them... Who knows... They had a super tough battle in the quarter finals against their good friends Rampage-zeta. Although they emerged the victor in the Rampage-Rampage clash, they really weren't permitted the opportunity to enjoy it. We'll find many life lessons in that game...
Alpha proceeded to get knocked out in a tough semi final match against a strong West Side squad. The boys probably out shot and out possessed the Eagles by a factor of 3:1, but couldn't hit their backside with a banjo in this game, no less the back of the net. But they made up for a tough loss knocking off a big Apollo team 10-1 in the 3rd place match for a fun ending to a competitive weekend.
Zeta had a very successful weekend barring a heart breaker against their own team mates. They knocked off an excellent all girls team called the Force in game 1. That was a bit of a wake up call and after that zeta was on fire, going on to win their bracket. Unfortunately, as things worked out, they had to face their friends (and 24 minute nemesis) Rampage-alpha. After going up 2-0 and having a lead at half time, they got caught off guard by a couple of quick goals from alpha spoilers, Cameron and Mitch. Zeta made a heroic attempt to come back, but dropped this one by a 5-6 score. Disappointed to be knocked out so early and after such a great effort, zeta went on to play in a great consolation game against the T-boys, another team that won their bracket, but got knocked out in the quarter finals. It was a super fun, wide open game. Taylor was an animal and probably played the best match of his life. It was exciting to watch.
All in all, we got from the weekend what we went for... Lots of touches on the ball, lots of goals (91 to be precise!), lots of fun, and a few life lessons to take back with us and learn from... Camp selected James as the sportsman of the tournament for alpha and Connor selected TJ for zeta. James played super this weekend knocking in 5 goals and having 5 assists, and certainly led the team in determination and unselfish play. TJ played a spectacular weekend of soccer, showing great leadership and knocking in 7 goals, 3 assists, and leading the team with 8 great defensive plays. Congratulations, James and TJ, and all ten players for a great weekend of soccer.
